Alienation as a human experience is a culmination of various circumstances, which in turn cause isolation, depression, loneliness, suicidal thoughts and eventually death in some recorded cases.
The collection of paintings and prints done reflect the agonsing period experienced by many who go through these phases but feel too broken to communicate, regardless of how much of confidence they exude while in public. This collection of works as earlier mentioned in my research, were created to depict the melancholic and negative and yet unavoidable feeling that is often experienced attached to alienation which is often accompanied by loneliness, fear, anxiety and sadness
The eyes are symbolic of the many emotions and experiences, as emotions and memories are forever alive and impact on our conscious and subconscious. The fractured individual is represented in many broken colours and haphazardly drawn lines which emphasise the fragility inherent in the nature of the human being. This layer sits underneath the layer that features the eyes.
As shown during the process of creating this, these individual layers emphasise a multiplicity of experiences the alienated individual continually faces in their continuous battle towards a balance between their inner being, mind and their human self.
The choice of utilisng the boxed frame was bourne from the idea of maintaining some level of uni- formity with the layered effect created by painting the various elements on different layers of acetate. This added dimension to the paintings which I was particularly satisfied with and intend to carry through in my enagagement with other projects in the near future.
It must be mentioned that prior to engaging with this project, I had never utilised or involved the collaging technique as an artist in many of my finished works. Seeing it work as well as it has with two pieces from the collection has beena great revelation and the intention will be to work towards adopting it in my working process.
